ABOUT THE RETREAT

The art retreat at KIRA is an exclusive creative experience where photographers will be guided to reflect on their work and its meaning, helping both established and emerging photographers refine their vision, reframe their projects, and encourage them to take their work to the next level.

Through illustrated talks on art and photography, outings, one-on-one, and joint evaluation sessions, you will discover new ways to express the familiar in personal, innovative visual statements using entirely in-camera

practices that will take you beyond representational image-making. We will be encouraging you to see your own story and interpret your voice.

LOCATION

St. Andrew’s by-the-sea, one of New Brunswick’s most beautiful ocean-front destinations. It is situated along the western side of the Bay of Fundy, just an hour’s drive from Saint John, NB, and very few places like it.

This creative photography retreat will be held at Kingsbrae International Residency for the Arts (KIRA). Meeting rooms, accommodation, and meals will all be in the 27-acre Kingsbrae Gardens. Kingsbrae is a magnificent park

with over 50,000 perennials in themed gardens, including sculptures, ponds, streams, and the award-winning Garden Café. (Visit www.kingsbraegarden.com for an overview and check out KIRA.)

His work has been featured nationally and internationally in galleries, magazines, books, and he has been engaged as the keynote speaker for corporate and photographic conferences in three continents.

Since 1992, his works have been shown in several solo and group exhibitions, in various cultural centres and art galleries, in addition, some of his works are part of a permanent collection to the African American Museum

and Center for Education and Applied Arts in New York. In 2005, he founded ArtQuest Photo Tours and Workshops, where it organized various workshops and tours worldwide.

WORKSHOP CONTENT

This is an artist residency, a time and opportunity for creative self-exploration.

Participants will meet Maurice at four o’clock Sunday afternoon on the spacious veranda of the KIRA residence to discuss the gardens, the town, workshop content, hopes and ideas for personal projects, and the week together, then share dinner.

On Monday, all participants will have the morning for exploring and making photographs in the many different gardens before viewing and discussing images in the afternoon. Maurice will have several programs available;

he will offer those he feels are most relevant to participants’ interests and direction during the week. Participants may opt out of any program, evaluation, or discussion, as Maurice wants each person to pursue their own artistic goals. His role will be to provide relevant instruction, objective (and subjective) evaluation, guidance, and support. Participants will have access to all parts of Kingsbrae Garden before, during, and after public visiting hours (from dawn to dusk). You may also visit and photograph in the town of St. Andrews (easy walking distance).

ACCOMMODATIONS

The five-day/six-night workshop/retreat fee includes meals and accommodation in a private room with a private bath is $2795 (CDN) per person + HST (15%). (If your dietary restrictions require the purchase of specialty items, an additional fee may be charged.)

Participants should arrive before 4 pm on Sunday and depart the following Saturday morning. We will maintain a waiting list for each workshop once we have reached a maximum of 6 students. If there is no space in either of your requested courses, you may want to place your name on this list. Please indicate

how much notification time you require to attend - the less time you need, the better your chance.

Participants' guests, partners, and friends do not pay the tuition fee and should not expect to attend regular lectures or receive field instruction. They may join Maurice and workshop participants for dinners and the final day of programs. (Pets cannot be accommodated). The fee for meals and accommodation for the week for partners or friends will be $1200.00 + HST (15%).

REQUIREMENTS

1. Participants must be familiar with their camera(s) and with the playback features that enable you to select, delete, and transfer images to your computer or flash drive. This is not a workshop on operating your camera,

phone, or other photographic equipment. Bring instructional manuals with you if you feel in the least uncertain.

2. Participants must bring their laptop computer. A digital projector will be available. It would help if you were sufficiently adept with software such as Photoshop or Lightroom to adjust your images' contrast, brightness, hue, saturation, and sharpness. You must also resize your images and save them as Jpegs to a flash drive/USB.

(Participants may shoot raw files, but we will work with jpegs to speed up workflow.)

REGISTRATION:

We will take registrations on a first-come/first-served basis. A deposit of $1000.00 is required to reserve your place, or you may pay in full at the time of booking. The remaining balance is due 45 days before the workshop/retreat. If the remaining balance is not paid in full, your place and deposit will be forfeited.

CANCELLATION

No refunds will be given if the booking is cancelled within 30 days of the workshop date. If the booking is cancelled between 30-45 days before departure, 50% of the booking value will be forfeit. We reserve the right to cancel the trip due to unforeseen circumstances. If the trip is cancelled, we will arrange an alternative date or a full refund if you can not make the alternative date.

##We recommend travel insurance to cover your trip and camera equipment.
